I PROTOTIPI A MARCHIO eDelfino® - THE PROTOTYPES UNDER THE eDelfino® TRADEMARK
Its external structure

Its internal structure - Its flexible electronic circuits

In essence, flexible circuits - like those contained in eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® - are next-generation applications useful to the electronics sector at the very least and interesting because:
- When subjected to an impact or stress, they do not break but bend.
- The flexible dielectric can withstand high temperatures, up to approximately 400°C, without disintegrating
- With proper design, a flexible circuit board allows you to see the layer underneath the solder of a chip and check its accuracy by sight.
Its internal and external structure - The mechanics of flexible parts and its importance in this context
The creation of eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® necessarily requires the use of a flexible material so that the product can be worn around the neck and head of the user; this requirement allows, at the same time, to obtain a device with high shock absorption capacity, such as to reduce as much as possible the probability of breakage of the internal components of the device itself.
In its first creation, the eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® features an external casing in TPU, a modern form of polyurethane that can be processed using 3D printers; in particular, the polyurethane forms produced by BASF can also be processed using the very modern MJF - Multi Jet Fusion - 3D printers by HP, which allow the creation of three-dimensional geometries, even partially closed at the ends, without the need for any support during the printing phase.
VDPROJECT SRL has prepared the 3D CAD files to create both the external casing and the internal shock absorbers of the eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® with a type of TPU - Thermoplastic Polyurethane; the latter are designed to be able, at a minimum, to maintain their structure unchanged within an impact area of less than 2.5 cm² and to absorb the impact in at least one direction and following a fall from a height of no more than 25 m. These shock absorbers can also withstand impacts at speeds greater than 79 km/h and from heights greater than 25 m with appropriate sizing and/or accepting a possible deformation - also because they can be replaced at low cost where necessary; they can also be modified in shape to adapt to the external design of the device that houses them and to the weight to be supported.
There is therefore a clear difference between a traditional mobile phone case and the eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® casing!
Below are some simulation examples showing the clear difference in free fall pressure experienced by a glass-reinforced PA66 plastic phone case and a compact polyurethane shock absorber.
- Simulation for a PA66 glass-reinforced mobile phone case, example provided by ANSYS for ANSYS Mechanical and LS-DYNA: https://ansyshelp.ansys.com/public/account/secured?returnurl=////////Views/Secured/corp/v242/en/acp_fiber_tut/acp_fiber_tut_ch_tutorial_5.html
Maximum pressure produced in free fall in the example: 215.45 MPa = 215 450 000 Pa
Case breaks in simulation
- Simulation for a polyurethane shock absorber with coefficients adapted to modern production of interest of VDPROJECT SRL with images to follow, kindly obtained with ANSYS Mechanical 2024 for study purposes
Maximum pressure/Maximum principal stress produced/produced in free fall from 25 m height: = 0.012721 MPa = 12 721 Pa
The shock absorber bends in the simulation and according to the data provided to VDPROJECT SRL it is still in the elastic region, so after the impact it restores its shape automatically.

What can the eDelfino® HELMET FLEXIBLE eUNIT® do? - Its functions

Automatic helmet impact detection - Operation demonstration
The following video shows a test session in which, through a covered prototype, the basic ability of the flexible electronic boards with MEMS accelerometers of eDelfino® to function correctly as crash detectors on the helmet, crashes that can occur when a motorcyclist or a driver with similar characteristics falls from his vehicle, is demonstrated. These boards therefore act as a small, thin measurement system.
Automatic detection of dangerous potholes and speed bumps - Why does it work?
The first video below explains the general principle around which this function was built and demonstrates that the prototype is able to perform it. Both the IMU unit with accelerometer gyroscope temperature sensor and the telephone board containing the GSM module that plays the acoustic warning in this example are flexible and all connectable by a single flexible board! They are therefore very thin and very light, so as not to weigh on the person carrying them.
There may be several valid electronic implementations for the eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit®, but they all rely on the use of flexible boards.
The prototype devices that perform this function have all been declared automotive class and compliant with the current RoHS Directive - DELEGATED DIRECTIVE (EU) 2015/863 - partly suitable for safety-relevant applications ISO 26262 for automotive MEMS. All the MEMS used have a minimum defined MTTF and are therefore reliable devices for this type of use.
How many ways can this feature be used?
Automatic detection of dangerous potholes and bumps allows the user to:
- To recover from riding motorcycles, bicycles and similar before falling
- Also check the serious jolts that the load it transports receives, thus avoiding that fragile or unstable objects are damaged during transport.
Please note that it is highly unlikely that it will be possible to define a priori and with absolute certainty the maximum dimensions that a hole can assume, while bumps, when present by construction, are generally regulated.
For this reason, the automatic detection system for potholes and bumps by VDPROJECT SRL can always be useful.
Furthermore, vehicles such as bicycles, motorcycles and other two- or multi-wheeled vehicles are equipped primarily with a suspension system and in some cases also with a shock absorber system - usually, larger and heavier vehicles are equipped with both suspension and shock absorbers.
There are also technical reference standards with which the performance of these systems is measured.
Automatic measurement of heart rate and blood pressure on the carotid artery - Operating principle and general characteristics
eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® is able to detect the heartbeat and blood pressure at least one of the user's carotid arteries via MEMS measurement, thanks to its flexible PCB sensors and its anatomical shape, which covers the front part of the user's neck. This device is portable and wearable; it does not require a visit to a doctor's office to perform the measurement and the resulting values can be transmitted via telephone message - such as SMS, as in the eCall - or via Bluetooth or other similar means. Below you can see an example of a slightly amplified signal coming from a MEMS sensor when positioned on a carotid artery, where the carotid pulsation is evident. Other measurements are carried out internally at VDPROJECT SRL

I brevetti - The related patents

eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® is an innovative, patented product, designed to be added to any helmet and helps the user to communicate with the PSAP/112 emergency responders when they need help, with whatever motorcycle they are using or with vehicles or conditions that present risks similar to falling from a motorcycle and which can indicate the caller's vital status during the eCall phase.
eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® would also like to help female motorcyclists, male motorcyclists and users with similar risk scenarios to avoid such conditions while riding and can be moved from one helmet to another.
eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® is suitable or adaptable for users of motorcycles, bicycles, E-bikes, scooters, pedelecs without altering the vehicle, without altering the characteristics of the helmet and is potentially applicable also for similar conditions on snow. The novelty of eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® is and has also been the extension of the eCall to those who previously could not use it!!!
The development of eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® is a strictly confidential and continuously evolving topic; however, VDPROJECT SRL wishes to show you an extract of its Research activities without compromising its confidentiality.
VDPROJECT SRL also takes this opportunity to thank the Supplier Companies that contribute and have contributed to the success of all Research, Engineering and Design activities in the Engineering sector of the company, as well as the Single Emergency Center CUE/CUR NUE 112/PSAP of Varese which allowed the owner of VDPROJECT SRL to visit the Center on 09/28/2022 and to test the first prototype of eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® in real time with a more than positive outcome.
A third example of why the eDelfino Helmet Flexible eUnit® works and why its development is worth funding:
eDelfino Helmet Flexible eUnit® includes a special function to prevent falls caused by bumps and potholes for those who travel by motorbike, bicycle and in similar cases.
The following video shows and demonstrates that, every time we drive a vehicle or a means of transport over bumps or bumpy and potholed asphalt at medium-high speed, a part of our vehicle lifts off the ground; this also applies to motorcycles, bicycles, scooters and similar vehicles and it is all the more risky the lighter the vehicle we use.
Each check in the following graph that exceeds the line indicating the ground equilibrium condition represents a force exerted upwards on the means of transport on which we travel; this force has been measured in this example with a MEMS accelerometer suitable for use in automotive/road car applications, therefore on cars and motorcycles.
Each checkmark in the graph helps eDelfino Helmet Flexible eUnit® to know the maximum period within which to acquire data from the accelerometer sensors to best perform this function.
Through road acquisitions like this the eDelfino Helmet Flexible eUnit® is calibrated to warn you of a potential driving hazard and, simply put, it works!
A third example which shows the reason why eDelfino Helmet Flexible eUnit® works and why its development deserves to be financed:
If you watch the video below, you can observe how eDelfino Helmet Flexible eUnit® can detect through an automotive MEMS accelerometer the presence of bumps and potholes and might help the user to avoid falls when they drive a motorcycle, a bike, a similar vehicle or similar means of transportation.
The video represents one of the Engineering testing activities of VDPROJECT SRL
The video shows one of the possibile Engineering tests of VDPROJECT S.R.L.
From today eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® can also tell you that it doesn't burn.

Automatic and manual Emergency Call to 112 in case of a fall from the vehicle and/or an accident with real-time monitoring and transmission of vital parameters to help the rescue team in the organisation of a quick and punctual intervention, which is performed as per current GDPR for the European market;Monitoring and reconstruction of the dynamic of the fall and/or the accident, with a focus on impact on the user's head;Automatic alert with synthetized voice about possible dangerous riding conditions (such as the presence of potholes and humps, the lack of adherence, etc.) and driver assistance to reduce the probability of a fall and/or an accident (for use on vehicles only).
NEW: Robust ● Complete ● Bi-directional audio communication with the rescuer ● Functionalities of fall prevention ● Compatibility with on-board electronic control units
The product has already obtained the patentability requirements and it is patented in Italy, in Europe and in the US; it is intended also to extend the current eCall service to vehicles different from the automobiles, in particular to all the vehicles, the use of which requires a helmet to be worn or for the use of which wearing a helmet is recommended, as well as to other various use cases, including:
MORE: Use on bicycles, eBikes, and while the user is riding road and/or track motorcycles and motorbikes, quads, mopeds, motorized or muscolar three-wheeled cycles, scooters, Segway®, etc. for professional purposes and leisure time;MORE: Use in professional and sport activities to be performed in the mountains; MORE: Use on watercrafts and in water sport activities with similar risks, i.e. rafting;MORE: Protection of personnel involved in construction, ship-building industries, and agriculture;Other sport and professional activities.
Why is the system called eDelfino®?
eDelfino® is the union of the acronym "e", which stands for Emergency and also for Electric and Electronic equipment, with the Italian name of one of the most clever and adored water animals, the dolphin ("Delfino"). As known from the ancient times, the dolphin is able to rescue and to drive the sailors in safe areas, avoiding them risky conditions on voyage. Therefore, the name eDelfino® sums up all the relevant aspects of the first above-mentioned innovative system relative to the safety of the user and to product technologies. eDelfino® is also a creative way to write the name Edelfino, which means "little Edelfo" in Italian. You are here reminded that Edelfo is a personal name used and in use in Italian and in Spanish; therefore, eDelfino® can be considered as the first name of the above described system and you can find it in the extended eDelfino Helmet Flexible eUnit® trademark.

ATTENTION: For motorcycle helmets it is advisable to position the microphones
inside the helmet protected area as much as possible, to protect them in the event of a fall!
Clearly, full-face helmets offer excellent protection in this regard.
For other helmets, protection also varies depending on the helmet itself and VDPROJECT SRL tries, in any case, to optimize the position of speakers and microphones.

VDPROJECT.eu® Development of REACH ME:
APP FOR QUICK CALLING AND LOCATION TRANSMISSION
Voice and data telephone transmission technologies have evolved over time; today, in Italy 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks coexist, while in other European countries only 2G, 4G and 5G networks are found.
For this reason, VDPROJECT SRL has followed and continues to follow the technological pace by developing its own internal programming skills also for the smartphone sector. These programming skills are added to the broad and professional programming skills for industrial, automotive devices and for industrial, automotive or consumer phones with equal IT characteristics.
Product development activities under the VDPROJECT.eu® brand have also led to obtaining RAGGIUNGIMI, a prototype app that allows you to call a trusted reference contact with just the press of a button and transmit your location to that person or reference as made available by your smartphone. The video on the side shows you how it works with Android.
Alongside non-emergency calls, emergency calls, today also in the form of eCall, require the use of networks of different generations, as the founder of this company had partly foreseen; VDPROJECT SRL is therefore constantly updating itself to use all the emergency call technologies available.

FAQ: ITA: Answers to some questions received to date
- What are the differences between a device like eDelfino® and iPhoneTM apps when making emergency calls?
- Can eDelfino® also make normal calls?
Current answer:
- This product description is based on currently publishable details and maintains confidentiality on all other aspects of product development. It may be updated periodically.
- eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® is a patented product, unique in its kind, dedicated to eCall emergency calls and is designed to be applicable on all helmets, including motorcycle helmets, bicycle helmets and similar.
- eDelfino® in Italy and Europe bases its operation on eCall, precisely, on the automatic emergency call system for vehicles regulated and recognized, also legally, at European level. The eCall type emergency call consists of:
- a message containing data useful for locating the caller and identifying the vehicle or means with which the accident occurred or on which the caller is travelling while in difficulty
- indicative data on the caller's vitality status in the specific case of eDelfino®, which consist of the transmission of blood pressure measured in the carotid artery from which it is possible to deduce the presence of a heartbeat in the caller and his vitality status.
- iPhoneTM apps and similar software present in cell phones are not designed to be used on helmets or on motorcycles or similar vehicles, as publicly declared for example by Apple itself. Such apps are not able to perform the message eCall function, but are based on a simple voice call to 112 and are therefore less likely to successfully transmit the caller's location in an emergency; for example, they may not be able to transmit the caller's location due to the unavailability, breakage or other reasons, of the cell phone microphone. In a normal call to 112, among other things, it is not guaranteed that the receiving staff will have a caller location system immediately available, a system that is certainly present when the emergency call is of the eCall type.
- Furthermore, in some cases apps can cover the real voice of the caller and this does not happen in the emergency call of the eCall type, as performed by eDelfino®. The purity of the audio of the eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® allows, for example, together with the eCall features, to perceive the wheezing, breathing or words spoken in a low voice of a person with reduced or absent state of consciousness, but still vital and therefore in need of immediate and urgent assistance. Similarly, the eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® also allows rescuers to recognize callers without a voice and to provide these people with adequate assistance. This happens without any manual intervention, unlike the apps on Apple mobile phones.
- Another important difference between the < app
> present on iPhoneTM and the eCall emergency call function, as performed by eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit®, consists of the option to cancel the emergency call, which is present on iPhoneTM and absent in eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® in its final version, as required by the technical regulations applicable to IVS systems that perform the eCall emergency call. VDPROJECT SRL does not judge anyone's actions, but briefly reminds that preventing timely assistance in the event of an accident with injuries, deaths or people in danger is a crime, known in Italy at least with the name of "Failure to provide assistance" and with equivalents in all European countries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duty_to_rescue. For this reason, the eCall is activated in all cases of detected accident and the user can ask the rescue operator not to intervene if he deems that the assistance is not necessary for himself and for others who may be involved.
- eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® contains two units that can perform the eCall emergency call, while the mobile phones contain only one that performs the voice call to 112 in Europe.
- Among the many differences between eDelfino® and the aforementioned mobile phone apps is the fact that none of these apps are able to provide useful data about the impact on the user's head caused by a fall.
- I would like to thank again all those who have shown interest in the eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® to date. This activity requires ongoing support; anyone who would like to know more and intends to finance the development and completion of the eDelfino® Helmet Flexible eUnit® prototype can write to info@vdproject.eu.
